| 824 | Mr Harding wrote a book many years ago called a "Tour of Snettisham". The Round House. Sometimes call the Hexagon or Octagon house was built with carrstone from the local quarry with decorative designs and gothic windows. The roof is made of blue pantiles which were first used in the 18th century. The house was built for Catherine, the wife of Nicholas Styleman 111 from the Old Hall, as a retreat with a tea room and music room where an organ was installed. Catherine's main interest was the garden layout with a grotto made out of the halves of a boat and decorated with shells, seaweed and coral. The river Ingol flowed through the ground, and there was a beautiful cascade. Shelduck and swans were on the pond, and the area was sheltered with plantations, one being named "Kate's Island". In the grounds were peacocks, guinea fowls and foreign birds. In all, it was a beautiful approach to the village. Later the Round House was known as the Round House Nursery followed by Newbridge House Nurseries. In the mid-19th century a farm adjoined the premises, which was rented to the Grange family. Around 1830 to 1861, Mr and Mrs Robert Auker live at the Round House. One son Robert was born here in 1844, who later became the village bill poster. In 1897 WALTER WALKER was the tenant and nurseryman. He was nicknames KITTY, and led the village carnival processions on horseback, dressed as a King wearing an ermine cloak and crown. When he died his widow married Mr Mack, and they carried on the nursery business. The property is now owned by Mr Monte Christopher and his wife, he was head game keeper to the Sandringham estate until he retired a few years ago at a great age.The property was up for sale in 2008. | Walker, Walter James "Kitty" (I71)
