1. Joseph1 French, son of Elizabeth, was born in Wethersfield, Essex? 1801. Year and place of birth taken from 1841 Census. Joseph died 26 July 1864 in Lower Green, Wethersfield, Essex, at 63 years of age. No record of Joseph in 1871 Census. Copy certificate issued 27 October 2010 for his death. Believed to be the correct person as his address matches that for the 1861 Census. Aged 64 a farm labourer. The informant was Mary Everett of Slate Cottages Wethersfield who made her mark. It is not known what relationship if any there was between Joseph abd the informant. Wethersfield was spelt Weathersfield.

He married Elizabeth (or Eliza) Carder? 1824. Date supplied by Maureen French.

Elizabeth was born 1806. Elizabeth died March 1852 in Braintree, Essex, at 45 years of age. She died between the 1851 Census and 1861 Census. Free BMD has several possible entries during that time but the most likely is one registered in Braintree Ref. 4a 205.

HO 107 Piece 1785, Folio 128, Page 13 shows Joseph 50 an agricultutal labourer, Eliza 45 straw plaiter and the children Betsy (Elizabeth) 15 straw plaiter, Maria 9 straw plaiter and Joseph 7, Philip 4 and Charles 1 and mother Elizabeth widow 90 a pauper (agricultural labourer) all born Wethersfield.

child 9 viii. Charles French was born in Wethersfield, Essex about 1850. Birthplace and year of birth taken from 1851 Census. Charles died December 1859 in Halstead, Essex, at 9 years of age. Charles does not appear on the 1861 Census when he would have been aged 11 and it is assumed that he died before that date. Free BMD has an entry Ref. Halstead 4a 199 which may be for him.
