10. Samuel3 French (Newcomb(e)2, Joseph1) was born in Wethersfield, Essex 10 January 1850. Copy of certificate issued 27 November 1891 received from Sandra Shiel. Samuel died 8 June 1919 in Stobart Street, Edmondsley, Co. Durham, at 69 years of age. Details taken from family bible. Free BMD has an entry Ref. Volume 10A Page 566. He married twice. He married Jane Layzell in Independent Chapel, Wethersfield, 20 October 1871. Copy certificate issued 13 April 2005 sent to me by Maureen French

Jane was born about 1850. Jane was the daughter of Alfred Layzell. Jane died 16 June 1874 in The Hyde, Wethersfield, Essex, at 23 years of age. Copy death certificate dated 15 April 2005 sent to me by Maureen French.

He married Mary Ann Wilde in St. Peter's Church, Sacriston, Co. Durham, 23 December 1876. Copy Certificate issued 19 March 1987. Entry No. 75. Both parties resided at Nettlesworth. Samuel French, aged 26 described as a Labourer made his mark. His father Newcombe French described as Labourer. Mary aged 18 & her father William Wild described as Boat Builder. Mary's birth certificate shows surname as Wilde.

Mary was born in Sunderland, Co. Durham 2 March 1859. Copy certificate obtained 18 February 2005. Sunderland 10a 453. Mary was the daughter of William Wild(e) and Mary Graham.

Mary died 6 December 1939 in 16 West Parade, Plawsworth, Co. Durham, at 80 years of age. Copy certificate issued 10 November 2010. She is aged 82 which is a year out from her actual age. The informant is shown as A J T French son present at death. I consider that the registrar has misinterpreted the signature which I believe to be Alf J French.

She was christened in St Peter Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, 23 March 1859. Information from Mormons web site, Batch No.C006932.

She was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in 6 Millum Terrace, Monkwearmouth, Co. Durham. RG09 Piece 3784 Folio 34 Page 1 shows William aged 38 a boat builder, Mary 31 and daughter Mary 2. The address could possibly be Milburn Terrace not Millum Terrace. There is no record of Elizabeth aged about 5.

She was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in 10 Hallgarth Square, Monkwearmouth, Co. Durham. RG10 Piece 5023 Folio 81 Page 70/71 William is aged 49 born Sunderland, daughters Elizabeth 15, Mary 12 and son William 9 all born at Monkwearmouth. There is no record of his wife Mary who is presumed to have died between 1861 and 1871 and William is described as a widower.

She was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Wellington Row, Edmondsley, Co. Durham. RG11 Piece 4980 Folio 79 Page 39. The family is shown as "Frank" but the original census has been examined and it is "French". Samuel 31 agricultural labourer, Mary Ann 24, Newcomb William 3, Mary Elizabeth 1 and Selina 1 week.

She was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in 18 St Mark's Road North, Sunderland, Co. Durham. RG12 Piece 4128, Folio, 49, Page 19. Samuel aged 41 a coachman domestic servant, Mary 33, Newcombe 13, Mary 11, Selina 10, Harriet 7, Alfred 5, Ada 2 and Ruth 7 months.

Census says Samuel was born at Blackmorsend, Essex but 1881 Census says he was born in Wethersfield, Essex, which is circa 5 miles away. William born Plawsworth, Alfred J, Ada, & May born Sunderland, Samuel and Martha born Edmondsley.

Samuel and Mary had 10 children 2 of whom have died.

He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Blackmore End, Wethersfield. Copy census sent to me by Maureen French. Newcomb is aged 22, his wife Elizabeth 21 and son Samuel 1.

He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in British Green, Wethersfield, Essex. RG09, Piece 1113, Folio 99, Page 9. Newcombe is shown as Nucomb agricultural labourer aged 32, Elizabeth straw plaiter 31, Samuel agricultural labourer 11, Selina 9, James 5, Ambrose 3 and Mary 6 months. (from family bible she appears to have been born in 1858).

He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Brick Kiln Green, Wethersfield, Essex. RG10 Piece 1700, Folio 97, Page 17 shows Newcombe 42 an agricultural labourer, Elizabeth 41 straw plaiter, Samuel 21 agricultural labourer, Selina 19 straw plaiter, James 15 agricultural labourer, Ambrose 13 agricultural labourer boy, Mary 10, Matilda 7 and Martha 4 all born in Wethersfield.
